Why the “z”?
A prefixed letter usually reads like a fallback. With zBRETT it's the opposite: the “z” is already true — it's a mark of provenance, not a compromise.
The story in one paragraph
zBRETT brings back an idea older than the web: the board — the structured, patient discussion forum of the German mailbox era. In the Z-Netz, the first democratically organised German-language mailbox network, these boards ran over phone lines from mailbox to mailbox, on the principle of store and forward. zBRETT rebuilds exactly that — only today it runs over LoRa radio instead of the line. The “z” is no accident. It's the origin: from the Z-Netz to the radio net.
Three anchors, all with Z, all true
Just as the “i” of a whole product generation stood for “internet,” the “z” stands for this lineage.
The boards
The first democratically organised German-language mailbox network, mid-1980s. Store-and-forward, email and discussion groups. Its forums were called Bretter (boards) — exactly the word zBRETT revives.
The protocol
From 1992, the network's own software-independent data-exchange method. Mail and news travelled between mailboxes over ZConnect — and the obligation to always forward boards in full lives on in the full-replication model of the hubs.
The beginning
The mailbox program it all began on; at first the network was simply the “Zerberus-Netz.” Three anchors of provenance, all with Z.
The Z as a thread
The strongest idea is in the shape of the letter itself. A “Z” is the path of an indented reply: across, drops a level down and right, across again. That is exactly the silhouette of a thread. Every variant is 1-bit-capable — no gradient, no halftone in the core mark.
Three strokes. The diagonal is the indent/connecting line of a reply.
Nodes at the ends = posts. A mini thread diagram; the last node carries the signal.
Built on the grid. Terminal/bitmap heritage, thought straight from the e-paper raster.
Thread + origin node + signal node. Clear, monochrome-capable, scales down to favicon size.
Spelling & taglines
Canonical: zBRETT
Lowercase “z,” uppercase “BRETT,” written together. Two building blocks, not one mangled word. Spoken: “Zett-Brett” — the German letter name plus “Brett.” Allowed alternative: z-BRETT. Not: zbrett, ZBrett, ZBRETT.
The tagline set
The board returns. — the shortest.
Boards. Like before. Over radio. — explanatory.
From the Z-Netz to the radio net. — the origin line.
Discussion no one can switch off. — resilience.
Store and forward. Since the 80s. Now without the line. — for the technical audience.
zBRETT and dasBRETT
Both names remain valid side by side — they denote different registers. “BRETT” is the constant.
